the workers of kiwandani

Kiwandani is a neighborhood in Kilifi, Kenya, where a cashew-processing factory once provided livelihoods for women and their families. When the factory closed, the loss reached far beyond its walls, affecting the economic life of the surrounding community.

The women pictured here represent the labor, resilience, and history of a place too easily overlooked. Their bodies and their work are part of that history, and these images deserve to be seen with dignity rather than shame.

I lived in Kiwandani. It was a place that welcomed me, nurtured my dreams, and taught me that wealth and generosity are not always found in the same places.

Kiwandani Coffee carries the name of that community in tribute to the women who worked, the families who endured, and the neighborhood that became my home.

Through this brand, we hope to honor that history while creating opportunities to support independent artists and creative communities.

We remember where we come from. We remember who built it.
